Tim Burton Admits Feeling “A Little Bit Lost” Before Returning To His Roots With The Beetlejuice Sequel

Tim Burton, the visionary director known for his gothic and whimsical style, recently opened up about feeling “a little bit lost” creatively before deciding to revisit one of his most beloved films, Beetlejuice. The highly anticipated sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, marks Burton’s return to the quirky and macabre world that helped define his career.

In a recent interview, Burton revealed that he had been searching for direction in his work, struggling to connect with recent projects in the same way he had with his earlier films.

Speaking candidly about his recent projects, Burton admitted “Over the past few years I got a little bit disillusioned with the movie industry, [I sort] of lost myself,” said Burton. “For me, I realized the only way to be a success is that I have to love doing it. For this one, I just enjoyed and loved making it.”

Burton’s unwillingness to revisit the story after more than three decades despite constant fan demand for a sequel, because he “never quite understood why it had been a success.”

“We did everything quickly. The things that usually take months we did quickly,” said Burton. Burton encouraged improvisation on set. “Even the ending wasn’t written. We were playing with everything,” he said.

The sequel will see Michael Keaton reprising his role as the mischievous ghost, joined by original cast members Winona Ryder and newcomers like Jenna Ortega.

For Burton, stepping back into the world of Beetlejuice has been a revitalizing experience. “It feels like coming home,” he said. With Beetlejuice 2, Burton hopes to remind both himself and his fans why embracing the strange and unusual can be so wonderfully liberating.
