Based on Eiichiro Oda’s manga series of the same name, One Piece is returning. When this series made its debut on Netflix, it surpassed various popular series including ‘Wednesday’ and ‘Stranger Things’, and secured a place among millions of hearts. Now, One Piece live action season 2 is all set to break records.
The Straw Hats crew members have reunited in Cape Town, South Africa, and some new artists also joined them for One Piece season 2 filming. In addition to them, new crew members are also contributing to the animated series and leveling up the narrative with their innovative ideas.
Creator Eiichiro Oda officially confirmed the One Piece season 2 live action by dropping a video on Netflix. About the series, he said, “It seems people around the world have been enjoying the show, which makes the hard work from the production team truly worth it.”
He added, “Two weeks after the launch, I just received some great news… Netflix has decided to renew the show! The adventures of Iñaki and the live-action Straw Hats will continue onward.”
One Piece live action season 2 release date is not confirmed yet. However, it is estimated that the series will hit streaming services in 2025. This speculation is made according to a Deadline report which stated that popular Netflix series such as One Piece, Stranger Things, Wednesday, Virgin River, and Ginny & Georgia would not return until 2025.
All five members of the Straw Hats crew will reprise their roles in Netflix’s One Piece live action season 2. It includes Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Emily Rudd as Nami, Taz Skylar as Sanji, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro.
Apart from them, some supporting characters are expected to reappear in the second season. The recurring cast includes Aidan Scott as Helmeppo, Vincent Regan as Vice Admiral Garp, Morgan Davies as Koby, Craig Fairbrass as Zeff, McKinley Belcher III as Arlong, Langley Kirkwood as Captain Morgan, Peter Gadiot as Shanks, Jeff Ward as Buggy the Clown, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino as Alvida, and more.
In addition to the previous faces, some new artists will join the One Piece season 2 live action cast. On 25 June 2024, Netflix announced the names of some new cast members who will step into the series and take the narrative to another level.
It includes David Dastmalchian as Mr. 3, Camrus Johnson as Mr. 5, Daniel Lasker as Mr. 9, and Jazzara Jaslyn as Miss Valentine. Netflix termed these four characters as Baroque Works agents.
One day after announcing this new group, Netflix disclosed three more characters on 26 June 2024. The platform announced that South African actor Werner Coetser will play the role of Dorry, Scottish actor Clive Russell will appear as Crocus, and Brendan Murray will be portrayed as Brogy.
On the third day (27 June 2024), Netflix revealed four more names who will become a part of One Piece live action cast season 2. It announced
Rob Colletti as Wapol, Julia Rehwald as Tashigi, Ty Keogh as Dalton, and Callum Kerr as Smoker.
The season 1 of the live action One Piece series was developed by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda and produced by Kaji Productions, Tomorrow Studios, and Shueisha. For season 2, a new creator Joe Tracz who has worked on the adaptations of Dash & Lily, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and A Series of Unfortunate Events, will join the production team.
He will work as co-showrunner, writer, and executive producer of One Piece season 2 live action. About Joe Tracz’s arrival, Owens said, “Joe has brought a wealth of enthusiasm and experience into our second season that will help take ONE PIECE to new heights. We’re incredibly lucky to have him as a co-captain of this ship. The best crew on the seas grows larger!”
In an interview with Deadline, showrunner Matt Owens talked about the Netflix One Piece live-action season 2 plot. He revealed, “From Luffy’s perspective, he’s got his crew now, and they are setting out to the Grand Line. They’re doing the thing, and there are a lot of challenges that come with that responsibility. And that theme ties into some other stories and characters that I won’t give away just yet. But the challenge and leadership is a big theme for us in Season 2.”
Additionally, he disclosed that the Smoker is the most important character in One Piece season 2.
“That character in the end is a very important character moving into our next season, and as Garp says to (Luffy) as well, you’re on your own. While Garp may have been the Marine who was testing Luffy, not every Marine is going to give him any leeway because of who his grandfather might be. And so we’re going to see this very powerful, very driven marine as a major antagonist moving forward in the story,” he added.
Analyzing One Piece season 2 new cast members, it seems like the new season will adapt to the Arabasta Arc which focuses on the Baroque Works criminal network, and if Doctor Kureha returns to the series, you can also expect Drum Island Arc.
One Piece live action season 1 consists of 8 episodes that span over 50 minutes. As per the reports, Season 2 of the live action One Piece series will feature more than 8 episodes.
The new co-showrunner Joe Tracz stated while speaking to Tudum that Season 2 will be more giant than Season 1. He states, “I’ve been lucky to work on big adaptations of several beloved series and they don’t come bigger or more beloved than ONE PIECE”
“I’m a huge fan of Oda-san’s incredible imagination and I was blown away by what the live-action team created in Season 1. So it’s a dream and a joy to come aboard the Going Merry as it enters the Grand Line for an even more giant Season 2,” he adds.
