Netflix is now pursuing legal measures to identify all those who are responsible for the significant leaks of their anime and live-action series which surfaced before the Fall 2023 anime season. Earlier this summer, anime enthusiasts were stunned to discover that all the episodes of several upcoming Fall anime titles that consist of Terminator Zero, Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World, Dandadan, Ranma ½ and other films such as Mononoke had been available for the users on several social media platforms and piracy platforms.
This incident marked one of the biggest anime leaks that ever occurred given the considerable which was left before of official launch of the anime. According to the reports by Anime News Network, the Northern District of California has issued a subpoena to Discord looking for information that could help them identify the individuals involved in the leaks.
Netflix on November 15th filed the subpoena, citing a leaked image of the unreleased Squid Game Season 2 shared by a Discord user with the username @jacejohns4n who is supposed to be connected to the leaks and the significant anime leak hit Netflix hard in advance of Fall 2024.
Netflix subsequently issued an official statement that disclosed a compromise consisting of their post-production partners that resulted in the leaked footage of multiple titles. The statement revealed that one of our post-production partners has been compromised and footage from several of the titles has already leaked on online platforms. This further suggests that the incident leans more towards malicious theft instead of accidental sharing online and as of now, it remains unclear what additional actions Netflix may take after subprons from the Northern District of California court. These steps have clearly stated that Netflix will be taking hard steps to deal with these leaks and the person or agency behind them.
