The renowned director and actor Kevin Costner features his son Hayes as Nathaniel Kittredge in the latest American film series, ‘Horizon: An American Saga.’ Defending the casting of his son in the movie, Oscar-winning actor Kevin told ‘Today,’ “He’s a beautiful boy, and he’s quiet.”
“I have not shoved my children into the business,” he added. “I realize there’s so many young actors that would just kill to be in this movie and I don’t want to take those parts away from them just ‘cause I can place my own children in. But in this instance, it was a smaller part. I selfishly wanted him with me for the week, two weeks he was with me.”
Why Kevin Costner Chooses His Son Over Experienced Actors
In an interview with ‘Today’ anchor Savannah Guthrie, the ‘Bodyguard’ actor said that his son doesn’t have experience but he performed beautifully in the film. He only played a minor role and it took only two weeks for the shoot of his role. Additionally, he defended his act with the statement that it was one of his small efforts to spend time with his son.
The ‘Mr. Brooks’ actor said, “I selfishly wanted him with me for the week, two weeks he was with me. We would drive to the set every day.” Costner added, “He didn’t have a lot of experience, but he’s really beautiful in the movie.”
“It’s a really complicated scene,” Costner told Savannah Guthrie. “In the end, there’s a nobility, there’s an absolute fatalness about it. It’s what you want in a son. It’s what you don’t want a son to do, and at the end of the day, you’re proud that he would make that choice” he added.
Kevin Costner shares his son Hayes with his ex-wife Christine Baumgartner. Apart from him, he has six more children from his first and second marriages with Cindy Silva and Christine Baumgartner respectively.
In April, the ‘Black or White’ actor revealed that Hayes got his name from the character he plays in the movie.
He told ET, “I named him after the character I play in this. My character’s name is Hayes Ellison.” He continued, “And I named Hayes that character. So I was watching him grow up and I was thinking, ‘Man, I better get with it and make this movie.’”
