The renowned filmmaker and writer, James Gunn is in the limelight for his upcoming superhero movie Superman which is scheduled to release on July 11, 2025. Fans are desperately waiting and speculating about the film’s setting.
On Threads, about two days ago, a fan asked the director, James Gunn, “Is Superman set in 2021?” In reply, he said, “No.”

It’s not the first time DC Studios co-head, Gunn addressed a rumor about the film. In 2023, he clarified a logline that reads, “Superman, a cub reporter in Metropolis, embarks on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent.”
Addressing it, he revealed that he had no idea where the script came from and he didn’t write it.
Additionally, he said, “It has elements of truth (obviously based on things I’ve said in the past).”
“But I wouldn’t describe the plot this way, & I wouldn’t call Clark a cub reporter. He’s a thirty-year-old full-on reporter. But, yeah, we shoot in March. I’m grateful every day our production team worked their asses off to keep things going through the strikes. Forces impelled us to stop many times – & if we had we’d never make July 2025”, he continued.
James Gunn Talks About the Appearance of Hawkgirl in Superman
Before addressing the setting queries, a few days ago, James Gunn dropped the look of Hawkgirl #2 on social media. Additionally, he disclosed that the actress Isabela Merced will don the wings in the Superman movie.
His Threads post reads, “Today is the anniversary of Kendra Saunders’ first appearance as Hawkgirl! While Kendra took flight in JSA SECRET FILES #1 in 1999 underwriters James Robinson and David S. Goyer and artists Louis Small Jr. and Michael Bair, Hawkgirl first hit stands in 1940 as Shiera Sanders-Hall in FLASH COMICS #1 written by Gardner Fox and drawn by Dennis Neville.”
