Our beloved captain Monkey D. Luffy set sail at the age of 17 to find One Piece and become the king of the pirates. Luffy’s life changed when he accidentally ate Gum-Gum fruit, which turned his body into rubber. He trained and created different forms that he named “Gear”. Luffy uses gear 1 to 5 abilities and powers according to his wishes. 

Luffy’s base form is considered to be Gear 1, the rest of the Gears were developed through his creative mind and intense battles. 

It could be a little difficult to understand if you haven’t watched One Piece Arcs. But Don’t worry! Let’s set sail with the Straw Hat Pirates crew to find out all about Monkey D. Luffy’s Gears. Also, when does he unlock them? 

Gear Second – When Does Luffy Use Gear 2?

Luffy Gear 2 increases his blood flow pumping and enhances his speed and reflexes. Luffy first used Gear 2nd in Enies Lobby arc episode 272, fighting against Blueno of the CP9. It creates a steam-type aura around him but also puts too much pressure on the body but now, Strawhat mastered his Gear 2 ability.

Gear Third- When Does Luffy Use Gear 3?

Monkey D. Luffy Gear 3 is the technique where he blows air into his bones by biting the body part. The 3rd Gear of Luffy is mainly used for giant attacks with immense power.

The captain of Strawhat Pirates revealed this power while fighting CP9 Rob Lucci during the Enies Lobby arc in episode 288. At starting, Gear 3 shrinks Luffy’s body after use, but he overcame this impact. 

Luffy 3rd Gear Special Attacks

Gum Gum Giant Pistol	A giant Punch with air blown up fist into bones. Some moves you will be seeing later with Haki (spiritual energy manifest from willpower).
Gum Gum Giant Axe	A giant kick on the head from a distance.
Gum Gum Giant Bazooka	A giant destructive blow by combining both hands.
Gum Gum Elephant Gun	Gear 3 is another powerful attack, Haki coated giant punch for strong enemies.

Gear Fourth- When Does Luffy Use Gear 4?

Luffy’s Gear 4 is my 2nd favorite, it has multiple versions like Boundman, Tankman, and Snakeman. 4th Gear appeared in episode 726 of One Piece during the fight against Donquixote Doflamingo. This form is similar to gear 3 but needs an excessive amount of air into the body. 

Dressrosa arc covers many amazing fights and Haki-based attacks. Like all Luffy Gears, this one also had its drawbacks at first. He became too exhausted to move on his own and for that, he had trustworthy crew members to help him. Now let’s have a look at all the versions of Monkey D. Luffy Gear 4.

Boundman/Bounceman

Strawhat Luffy coats his air-blown body’s arms, torso, and toes with Haki giving him a larger and bouncy personality. Bounceman has many powerful attacks like Kong-Gun, Rhino Schneider, and more.

Tankman

The second version of Luffy’s Gear 4th is Tankman, this form mainly focuses on defense and only works best when Strawhat is fully stuffed with food. Tankman is used in the Whole Cake Island arc fighting against Charlotte Cracker. It absorbs and deflects enemy attacks and launches them far away with incredible force.

Snakeman

Luffy revealed this form of 4th Gear while fighting Charlotte Katakuri in the Whole Cake Island arc in episode 870. The version is mainly used for flexibility, speed, and powerful attacks. Some of the special moves of this Gear are Black Mamba, Jet Culverine, and King Cobra which cause massive damage to the enemy. These attacks are hard to predict due to irregular movements.

Gear Fifth- When Does Luffy Use Gear 5?

Monkey D. Luffy Gear 5 also known as the “Sun God Nika”, this form awakened during the fight against Kaido in the Wano Country arc. Episode 1071 showcases the event of this unpredictable form which manipulates his surroundings and body. 

Gear 5 of Luffy enhances his strength, imagination, and durability. This form has the most powerful attack named “Bajrang Gun”, infused with conqueror’s Haki with destructive power. In his 5th Gear, Luffy becomes the true Warrior of Liberation. 

Luffy 5th Gear Special Attacks

The secrets of Monkey D. Luffy’s Gear 5th are still not revealed completely, but here are some of his powerful attacks.

Gomu Gomu no Gigant	Strawhat can turn himself into a giant.
Gomu Gomu no Bajrang Gun	The giant and most powerful punch is infused with Conqueror Haki.
Gomu Gomu no Dawn Rocket	He uses his awakened power to bend the surrounding structure and throws a powerful punch.
Drum Beat Techniques	Plays with reality, using the ground as a rubber and fighting with unique and unpredictable attacks.

Our captain Monkey D. Luffy is not to be messed with, he is kind and sweet but during battles, he is pretty darn powerful. Mugiwara has 5 Gears in total, with the strongest being Gear 5 or “Sun God Nika.”

All Luffy Gears were unlocked or used during a situation where he was pushed to his limits or those who were close to him were in great danger. Each Gear has a special trait or characteristic that is distinctive from the previous one.
